Make an open bookcase feel calmer
Start with the books and objects you actually want to keep in the room. Group books in a few upright runs, then leave visible space between those groups rather than spreading small ornaments evenly over every shelf. A single framed print or rounded ceramic piece can break up the repeated rectangular shapes.
Choose a small palette from the rest of the room. Cream, warm brown and dark metal can connect a rustic-looking display with plain upholstery without turning the entire room into a matching furniture set.
